Rough day today.
Day started out well enough. Sun was out, water was plentiful, terrain was relatively flat.
Spent the entire day climbing up Mount Mica. 5000' of elevation over ten miles or so doesn't sound so bad, but it was indeed a long day of climbing for me.
Hit snow around 6500', deep enough for post holing. The last two miles of the day took over two and a half hours to complete.
Sun was getting low in the sky and I wasn't excepting nearly as much snow at the top. I'd anticipated being able to walk up and over and camp on the north side of Mica, but instead stopped at Manning Camp, a forest service ranger station near the top.
Cabin is locked up tight, but thankfully they've a small side building with emergency supplies and some floor space, so I decided to crash on the floor inside for the night. The snow outside is too deep to really get any stakes in the ground, making my tent relatively useless.
Four more hikers showed up after I'd settled in. Two were pretty obnoxious, smoking cigarettes inside the building and managed to light a table on fire with their alcohol stove.
Knee has been getting progressively worse, might have to get off trail because of it. It always sucks to have to leave the trail before your time, but in the end there's no point being out here being in pain and moving slowly.
We'll see what happens.
