Zero day in town today, and what a beautiful day it was. Hot Springs is a nice little town, it will be sad to leave it.
I looked at my expenses today, and after being on the trail for a month I've already spent $1,000 bucks.
I realize that I've been going intentionally slow for the first few weeks, stopping more than I will be later in the hike, and I also realize that I'll pick up speed as I increase the miles, but it's still an anxious burden on my mind.
Coming in to town is extremely difficult for me. Strange places, noises, unfamiliar people all over... I start to doubt myself and why I'm out here in the first place. Only is it when I'm out hiking, alone in the solitary of the woods, do I begin to feel even the slightest bit of relief from my the anxieties and depression of my daily life.
On a separate note, when I arrived into town yesterday my bank card was declined. I had a message from my bank that there was suspected fraud on my account, so they froze the card. After looking back over my transactions, there was one that was fraudulent.
I've met two other people on the trail in the same situation as well. It would appear that somewhere along the trail our cards were skimmed and then used illegally. It's unfortunate that this is happening, and I can only imagine that it's happened to countless others as well.
I have canceled the card and am having a new one sent up the trail to Erwin, TN. Until then I've been borrowing money from a fellow hiker I met and have been paying her back via online bank transfers. I truly appreciate her help, and without it I would be stuck in town for a few days waiting for the card to show up (spending even more money).
Heading out back to the trail tomorrow, even though it would seem the weather is going to turn on us for the next few days. I'll be smart about it and make sure to be safe, but as they say: No Rain, No pain, No Maine.
