Little bit of a late start today, wasn't able to get much sleep last night. Still up an out before 0800, but that's at least an hour after first light which some people would say is wasted hiking time.
Pretty great trail for most of today. Lush forested land and open plains, with wild and domesticated animals all over the place - even saw some cows eating palm fronds, something I didn't even know was possible. Recently crossed some magic latitude, saw my first squirrels and pines today. Squirrels were dancing and chattering all over the place, jumping from tree to palm fronds and back.
Had some "hilly" terrain as well today. First time since I started where I noticed that I was actually going up and down hill. Granted, it's still a Florida Hill. Haven't had to really huff it or puff it on trail, it was a welcome change of pace
Finished the day walking into Oviedo, and the trail along the Econlockhatchee River into town was spectacular. Bunch of locals must think the same thing, because I passed over one hundred people in a few miles. Good to see people out enjoying the nature.
The trail walks right through Oviedo, the closest thing I've encountered on the Florida Trail to a real trail town. Had planned on doing another gas station resupply, but after looking at the guidebook more closely I discovered the trail walks right by a local diner. All plans of resupplying went out the window and I beelined it for the restaurant.
Devoured a massive breakfast platter and drank a boatload of sweet tea. The server was very interested in long distance hiking so we chatted it up in between bites until a local trail angel showed up to have dinner with me. The trail community is so small in Florida that she knew I'd be coming through town today and after a quick Facebook message she was there in minutes.
We chatted for quite some time, and she invited me to do laundry and spend the evening at her home. Looks like I'll be spending tomorrow night here as well because she drives such a hard bargain, and well, because the next day's worth of hiking is pretty urban with no real good spots to stealth camp at.
