Up with the sun, out before 0800. Excited to get to the 88 Store later in the day, so I put in some tunes and powered on.
Trail throughout the Ocala National Forest has been pretty spectacular. From what people tell me it's basically the best 70 mile stretch of hiking on the whole trail. Everything has been pretty pristine out here, actual wilderness for the most part. Blazes have been accurate and appropriate, trail is well maintained, and has been nothing but actual foot travel only trail: no roads, sidewalks, bike paths, etc.
If anyone from the FTA is listening, this section of trail is what hikers (like me at least) expect, and come out on long distance hikes for.
Rolling hills for much of today. Granted, they're still Florida-style, but gradual changes in elevation were experienced through the day.
Arrived at the 88 Store early afternoon. A dive bar of a place that is more of a shack than a building, but with all the essentials. Had myself a few frozen microwaveable sandwiches, some sweet tea, and charged up and downloaded a few podcasts for later.
While I was arranging pickup for tomorrow afternoon back down to where the gathering is happening on Sunday, another hiker bought me a beer and we chatted for a bit. Waiting on a mail drop, he ended up staying the night while I packed up, grabbed an ice cream Snickers bar, and took off into the setting sun.
Managed a few more miles before it got too late into the evening, and I set up my tent in the dark alongside the trail.
Short day tomorrow, approximately eleven miles to my pickup point, which isn't until later in the afternoon. Not that I sleep much anyway, but there's no rush in the morning since I'll be waiting a bit most likely before getting picked up.
