Woke up with the sun this morning, a change of pace since I usually pull my buff over my eyes, put in a set of earplugs, and sleep until I wake.
Out of camp by 0615, making those miles. Was super humid all morning, like walking in a cloud. I was soaked through after only a few minutes of walking. After eleven days of near perfect, dry weather, this was an unfortunate change. Nothing I'm not used to from the AT and the LT.
Stopped around noon once the sun finally came out to strip down and wring out my clothes. I was immediately attacked by hundreds of mosquitoes, no matter where I went.
Afternoon was pleasant. Arrived at Lake Valhalla and decided to check it out. It's sandy beach and cool, clear water was much too inviting not to go for a quick swim.
The water was frigid, but refreshing. I quickly scrubbed myself down, washed some clothes, and laid on the beach to dry off. As I was getting ready to leave a couple offered me a beer and we talked briefly about what I was doing out here. After they left a small crowd gathered and another couple gave me a beer and asked me twenty questions about hiking long distance.
Sufficiently buzzed, I hiked the remaining six miles to Steven's Pass where I would end my day, but not before eating at one of restaurants on the ski lodge property.
Third car past picked me and another hiker up. Driver happened to be going in the same direction so she took us al the way to the hostel.
Checked in, cleaned up, finished laundry. Town chores can wait until tomorrow.
Nodding off writing this.
