Woke up early this morning with the sun. Didn't get a whole lot of sleep, but a little is better than nothing.
Took a shower, and made myself some breakfast on the hot plate. Bought myself some thinly sliced beef, half a dozen eggs, and some shredded cheese. Cooked it all up and used the extra tortillas I had bought to make burritos. Short resupplies can be difficult if you're not creative, can't find a lot of staples in numbers small enough that make sense.
Packed up and said goodbye to the few people who were moving around. Walked to the road and got a hitch within five minutes. The construction site that gave me so much trouble yesterday had moved down the road towards where I was hitching from, which means I was able to stand near the flagger and the long line of cars and thumb. Half the trouble in hitching is that people are usually driving too fast and have to make a split second decision to both pick you up and slow down. Cars lining up made it way easier.
Driver stopped in Skykomish for a quick breakfast sandwich and off we went up to Stevens Pass. Spent about an hour taking care of last minute chores and errands at the ski lodge, then hit the trail.
Hot day, bright sun. Started hiking around 1100, right in the heat of the day. Got to try out the sun hat I found in the hiker box. Worked pretty well, even if it does make me look like an old lady in her garden.
Solid hiking day otherwise. Considering when I started the miles I made are good.
Started doing a bit of math on when I would like to finish, and it's going to be a fast, tight pace. I included a handful of zero days as well as a week off to travel home and see the wife, so we'll see how it goes.
Got to a campsite around 2045, after the sun had set. As I was setting up my tent a doe and her fawn were within striking distance. I'm not sure if they smelled my food bag or what, but they were super close for twenty minutes or so, walking right up to me.
All settled in, skipped dinner and had a few handfuls of Fritos and some of those pink and white frosting coated circus animal cookies. Didn't eat much after I left town, but I did eat quite a bit for breakfast and that town food powers you for many, many miles.
