Didn't sleep very well last night, but truth be told that's nothing out of the ordinary. Strange house, strange room, strange noises. Even still, it was nice to spend a night indoors in a bed with an actual blanket.
Packed up and left the room to find my gracious host cooking breakfast. The little old lady made me a huge stack of pancakes, a couple of fried eggs, and some fried venison. It was pretty amazing.
We sat around for most of the morning eating, drinking coffee, and chatting. I helped her move her dryer out from behind the wall since her washer was leaking, and shortly thereafter I took off.
Walked next door and resupplied for the next few days, then crossed the street to a small diner. Ended up sitting at the counter for about five hours alternating between cups of coffee and glasses of fountain soda. The owners were two good natured men in their 60's, we chatted about various topics while I downloaded podcasts and updated the trail journal.
Another hiker came in after I'd had been there for an hour or two, and we talked for most of the afternoon. Turns out we'd both been in the military and had a bit of common ground. It was a serendipitous encounter, and I'm glad we were able to meet. Alas though, another northbound hiker who I'll most likely never see again.
Left the diner around 1500 and walked next door to the mega gas station. Used the bathroom, sat and finished uploading the journal via the gas station wifi, and headed out to the road to hitch back to the trail.
Even though there was a ton of traffic, it took about thirty minutes to get a ride. A young dude who fights fires for insurance companies pulled up in some sort of multipurpose fire fighting vehicle and offered to take me to the trail even though it wasn't exactly on his route.
Got back to the trail late in the afternoon. Hiked a few miles to another road crossing and got a free beer from a north bounder's mother and some water from a cache.
Hiked the last few miles to the rim of crater lake just as the sun was setting. Met a couple of drifters in a van who have been driving up and down the west coast and are in the park for the eclipse tomorrow. We chatted for a couple of minutes before the cops came and told them the lot they're parked in is closed at night.
Set up my tent right off the rim road. Going to try and get up early and catch the sunrise over crater lake. Not something I usually do, but it came highly recommended by another hiker, so I'll give it a shot.
