Up with the sun, slow to pack up camp. Out before 0800, which is as good as I could hope for without setting an alarm.
Hiked the few miles to where the closure was supposed to start, but didn't see any signage or the usual ribbon marking the trail as closed. Decided to hike on and see what I could see.
Met some fire fighters half way through the closure. Verified the information I had on the locations of the fires and confirmed my plan to continue on the PCT was both viable and safe.
Made it into Seiad Valley safe and sound, hitting up the general store before they closed for the evening. Grabbed a box of cereal, a half gallon of milk, a six pack of Sunkist soda, and walked next door to the RV park. They allow hikers to camp on their property for a fee, but also give you access to a shower, towel, soap, and laundry, so I paid the $15 and setup my tent.
Threw my laundry in and took a shower. Haven't done laundry since Bend, OR, and it's been quite a few days since I've showered. Almost feel human again.
Sat around for the rest of the evening considering alternates for the fire due south of here. Doesn't seem like any trails make sense, but with a day of road walking I can get around the closure and hop back on the trail south of Etna, CA.
