Woke up a couple of times last night not able to go back to sleep. Spent the majority of the night at a picnic table in the dark downloading stuff for the next leg of hiking, and updating my journal online.
Headed to a local restaurant for breakfast with Hot Coffee, ended up having a full table of five by the end of breakfast. A Swiss couple who I'd bumped into yesterday, as well as an Israeli guy who stayed at the trail angel's house showed up too.
It was nice, sitting and eating, drinking a bunch of coffee, talking with these other hikers. The first time since I've been out here that I actually felt comfortable in a group of people. I usually come away annoyed with people, but I could relate to this group, if only in the smallest fashion.
After breakfast it was just me and Hot Coffee again. We sat drinking coffee and taking care of life on our phones for a couple of hours.
Around noon a friend of mine who hiked the AT last summer showed up to have lunch. She happened to be in the area traveling when I was coming thru, so catching up with her was good.
We said our goodbyes, and I headed over to the local store to resupply. Luckily it's only 60 miles to the next resupply, so I didn't have to carry much out of town. There was an epic climb back into the mountains, and it was difficult enough with what I had.
As I was walking back to the hostel I bumped into two more hikers. After talking briefly I asked where they were from, and they both happen to be from the Czech Republic. I wow'd them with the little Czech I knew as we arrived at the hostel.
Shortly thereafter I packed up, said my goodbyes, and hiked out of town. Called the wife as I was walking to the trail to let her know when I'd be back in civilization, and off I went.
Hit the trail around 1430, walked until dark. Huge climb out of town was a pain, but the view was worth it at the top, even if it still is incredibly smoky.
Lying in my tent listening to some very odd sounds out in the woods. Camped right on the border of a previously burned out part of the wilderness, and I have no idea what I'm hearing right now. Sounds something like an owl murderizing a small animal in flight.
