Didn’t sleep much at all last night. Woke up with that stinging sensation in your eyes when you don’t get enough rest.
Had cell service so I FaceTimed the wife for a few minutes while I packed up.
Day went surprisingly well otherwise. Other than having to make a liter of water last twelve miles, it was a fine day of hiking. Spent the majority of the day gradually climbing up a hill, then walked along the Hat Creek Rim for the rest of the afternoon. Superfine views, and I actually enjoyed the change in scenery of being exposed and in the open instead of under trees and surrounded by foliage.
The weather is definitely changing. Today was an odd combination of cold breezes, and hot sun. When clouds came overhead and blocked the sun I was actually a bit chilly - but it’s the first time in weeks I haven’t been surrounded by smoke and haze though, so I’ll take it.
Moved pretty quickly today, even though I wasn’t as well rested as I would have liked. Near the end of the day I arrived at a natural phenonomen called “the subway tunnel”, a large tunnel carved out underground by lava flows. It was just getting dark, but I went down and in with my headlamp anyway - it was definitely a cool experience to see. Google it and check out the pictures, you won’t be disappointed.
Popped out the other end of the tunnel and realized I was a lot closer to my intended destination than I previously thought, so I walked into town and setup my stuff for the night behind a gas station. The owners kindly allow hikers to tent for free in the woods behind their property.
Hot breakfast and a minor resupply tomorrow.
