Slept alright last night, even though it was hovering around 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Probably because I was so exhausted from managing to do a full day’s worth of hiking between 1300-2200.
Noticed one of the baffles in my air mattress gave out last night, which means there’s a huge bulge into my back now when I sleep on it. Warranty replacement perhaps, fingers crossed.
Packed up, grabbed my food from a bear box down the trail, and hiked on over the half a mile to the Drakesbad Guest Ranch. Super cool place that’s located inside the park, with pretty delicious food, cabins, massages, horseback riding, and a volcanic spring fed soaking pool - I totally got vortexed.
Had a few cups of coffee on their deck while I chatted with a fellow hiker, munched on some oatmeal, fruit and yogurt, a cinnamon bun, and an egg and cheese omelet. Swung down to the pool afterwords and took a hot shower and a soak, talking with a few of the patrons about the trail.
Pretty cool afternoon of hiking - Lassen has a few volcanic water features, including a pond that’s boiling and a geyser shooting steam out of it. Both attractions were side trips that slowed me down, but stuff like that is worth it some days.
Rest of the day was uneventful. Plowed on down the trail, fueled by coffee and a full belly. Managed to get to my destination of a well trafficked road before dark, but wasn’t able to get a hitch into town.
Sleeping just up the trail by the road, will try again in the morning.
