Beautiful day, walked through some very desert-y terrain.
Spent some time training aboard MCAGCC Twentynine Palms, and this terrain is bringing back some memories. The trail will walk within a few miles of the base, so it's no wonder the terrain is very similar.
Moved quick today, had to get into the town of Julian within working hours to pick up a package. Easy hitch in, actually got a ride in with a postal worker.
Waited around at the amazing Carmen's for the postman all afternoon and spent the time chatting with other hikers, getting free hiker goodies (Pie! Beer!), and ordering a famously cheap yet delicious burrito (with one in my pack to go). She's unfortunately selling her establishment, but even though she's closed for business she's letting hikers hang out at her place, to include still cooking up food, letting people crash on her floors, and overall just being amazing.
Ended up walking to the post office since the tracking information on the package stated it was in town but not out for delivery. Turns out they wait for packages to pile up before delivering them around town to the various businesses. Lucky I went to check out what was up otherwise I would have been out of luck.
Packed up my stuff around 1630, said my goodbyes, walked out of town to get a hitch. Hikers started piling up on the shoulder of the road with the same intentions, but luckily someone stopped grabbed four of us in one go to head back to the trail. Typical "cram as many in the car with your packs on your lap" awesomeness ensued.
Managed to hike the 2.5 miles up hill before finding a pretty epic, covered camping spot for the night. Supposed to get SUPER windy tonight, with gusts of wind up to 70 MPH, so while my head said I should stay in town, my hiker heart pushed me back onto the trail.
We'll see how the night goes!
