Had a pretty crap night last night. Between the wind (30+ MPH all night) and my air mattress malfunctioning, I didn't get much sleep at all. Fed up, I woke in anger around 0230, packed up, and started walking.
Section of trail just ahead of where I was camped has been closed for the past few years. Fires took out most of the trees and vegetation, which led to mudslides being triggered during the next rainy season.
Took an alternate trail down the mountain toward Lake Hemet. Wind died down as my elevation decreased, which was very welcome.
Stopped at the convenience store at the entrance to Lake Hemet and grabbed a cup of coffee, warming myself in the sun before pushing on.
Many more side trails and alternates to get into Idyllwild, including a few miles of road walking.
Arrived in town before everyone due to my super early start this morning. Went to the post office to take care of a few things, bought some hot food from the grocery store, and chowed down while I waited for everyone to slowly trickle in.
Friend of mine from the AT ended up getting a hotel room for the night due to the sub freezing temperatures and expected snowfall this evening. She offered to let me hang in the room, shower, and charge up, all of which were greatly appreciated.
Decided to not spend the night and instead went to the grocery store for a few snacks before saying my goodbyes and leaving town.
Walked out of town to a connector trail back to the PCT. Decided to stop early due to the weather, high winds, and anticipated snow this evening, on top of the 2,300 feet of climbing before my planned campsite.
Found a secluded spot with loads of trees and bushes around to block the wind. Sun hasn't gone down completely as I type, yet still my hands are going numb.
Patched my air mattress and made sure to set up a stable tent tonight. Sure hope I get a good night's rest.
