Slept a few miles outside of Kennedy Meadows last night. Managed to wake up a bit earlier than usual, if only because it was significantly colder out than the last few days. Even though I laid wrapped up in all of my warming layers and sleeping bag for a few minutes longer than usual, I was packed up and walking by 0700.
Easy enough jaunt to the road and into the general store. The promise of coffee and a hot breakfast can do that to a hiker.
As I arrived I bumped into a hiker I met previously. He had arranged a shuttle to a restaurant down the road, so I immediately hopped in and rode with him.
Quite a few hikers I've seen before were scattered about the restaurant. They were still serving breakfast, and only had one item on the menu: eggs, bacon, fried potatoes, and all you can eat pancakes.
Sat around drinking coffee while we all waited for our food to come out. It was pleasant enough to talk to everyone, although by the end I was ready to be on my own again.
Checked out the outfitters across the street, the woman who writes one of the guidebooks for the trail recently moved to Kennedy Meadows and opened up a shop. Basic essentials were reasonably priced; ended up buying some electrolyte pouches and heading back to the restaurant.
Shuttle back to the general store was leaving as I returned, and I managed to flag them down and pile in the bed of the truck.
Back at the general store I grabbed the bear canister I shipped to myself, and began rifling through the food and gear I placed inside it before heading out here. Six days of food, micro spikes, a bug head netting, some bug repellent cream, and thermal leggings were all stuffed inside the canister.
Spent the early afternoon charging electronics and talking to another hiker. Ordered and ate a burger before heading out, a perfectly cooked double cheeseburger. Left around 1400, keen on getting a full day of miles in.
Managed to hit my mileage goal, hiking until dark. Camped on real life grass tonight instead of sand or gravel. First grassy spot in over seven hundred miles!
Pretty cold tonight, definitely going to dip below freezing. Next week should be pretty interesting since I'm camped at 7800 feet tonight and the majority of the trail ahead is much higher than that.
