Relatively good day today.
Woke up a little early to tackle another mountain pass. Made it up and over on mostly hard packed snow, which is much preferred to after the sun warms the snow, which is exactly what happened in the way down the other side. Unbeknownst to me at the time, the snow fields on the northern side ran for five whole miles, meaning that I only made it two miles in before the sun was in full force.
It was a rough couple of miles. Post holing sucks, post holing randomly every 3-5 steps is the worst. Gratefully, once below snow line the walking was much more pleasant.
The Muir Trail Ranch was in my sights today, promising a hot meal and a hiker box for some much needed supplementation to my dwindling food supply. Unfortunately they aren't open until mid June this season, meaning I'll be rationing even more severely than I thought.
Might end up attempting to get to VVR before the 1645 shuttle tomorrow afternoon. It would be an acceptable mileage day, as well as a hot meal and a boost to my food supply.
Definitely in the heart of the Sierra, and at a lower elevation tonight. The river in the gorge below is raging away with snow melt, and all of the birds and various animals are having a field day in the slightly warmer temperatures.
