Woke up this morning to the sounds of many birds chirping. Not sure if it's the lower elevation; or the lake close by, but wildlife was all over the place and super happy to be alive - spring is definitely here.
Packed up early and enjoyed having an actual bathroom to use, hot water and all. Headed into the small restaurant and had some coffee, and a massive breakfast. Sat around with a few other hikers while waiting for the 0900 shuttle.
Owner shuttled me back to the trail on the lake. We chatted along the way, and said our fair wells. As he departed I sat on the shore, enjoying the first cell service in a week. Chatted with the wife, downloaded some podcasts, made sure nothing important was sitting in my email, and caught up with a hiker or two who have been waiting to enter the Sierra due to weather.
Spent the day trudging pretty hard. Hit Silver Pass at the wrong time due to a late start, post holed for miles. Ended up bleeding all over the place from my shins which had finally had enough scraping on ice and snow.
While taking a break heading up the pass a hiker from Vienna caught up. He thanked me for blazing a new trail through the snow and offered to lead the rest of the way up the pass. I'm so thankful he showed up, he was a ball of energy and positivity that helped me get through the rest of the day. Sometimes it gets pretty rough out here, and merely being around another person who's going through it as well is really helpful.
We hiked for a few hours together, slogging along. At an alternate side trail we parted ways, him taking the side trail, tired and hopeful they the snow was less prevalent there.
Spent the rest of the evening climbing, trying to get as close to Mammoth as possible to make tomorrow that much easier. Unfortunately the snow picked right back up, so I stopped for the evening an hour before sunset.
Resupply tomorrow, last ever for me on the PCT. One hundred miles and I will be finished.
