Early morning, town day today so I wanted to get a head start. Super discouraging though, all the snow in the area was super crunchy on top, and like icy shards of glass underneath. Didn't support my weight at all, and made the morning a treacherous and tragic experience.
Managed alright, but it wasn't very fun. Even though there wasn't a pass today, trekking was difficult. I usually try and keep my feet dry, but a ford early in the morning meant my feet were icy cold until the sun warmed things up a couple hours later.
Day ended up being pleasant enough. Made it to the side trail towards horseshoe lake and managed a hitch relatively quickly. A few kids felt bad their dogs mobbed me when we met earlier, so they drove me into town and dropped me off by the Mammoth Lakes post office.
Grabbed my (final!) resupply package and walked into town. Checked out the bakery, but they were closed down except for a skeleton crew due to renovations.
A local I met at the trailhead mentioned a Latin market that sold hot food, so I explored a bit and checked it out. Awesome little spot, a hole in the wall sort of place. Met two guys in there who have lived there for twenty years and just found out about the place themselves.
Swung by the grocery store to supplement my resupply and grab some food for the night. Being late in the day I decided to spend the night at a local hostel before heading back to the trail in the morning.
Hopped in the local trolly and walked the rest of the way to the hostel. Cleaned up, got settled in, made dinner and chatted with another hiker who was hanging around.
Back to the trail tomorrow for the last 100 miles.
